Crater Lake NP - Pumice Desert
Four pairs of skis - Three SONC skiers

Cross country skiing in Southern Oregon?

Where the Siskiyous meet the Cascades. Southern Oregon Nordic skiers are blessed with a ring of snow surrounding the Rogue Valley during winter months.

Our normal ski season starts by early December and sometimes as early as the first week of November. Snow cover at our usual venues starts getting thin by mid March, but skiers willing to travel to near by Crater Lake, Mt. Shasta, or Telemark skiers interested in climbing Mt. McLaughlin and Mt. Scott extend their ski season into April, May and beyond.

Serving the greater Rogue Valley including the cities of Medford, Ashland, Eagle Point and the cities and areas near and around.

BLM/SONC Groomer Report:

SONC Volunteers groom the Hyatt Lake BLM Campground and Buck Pr. Nordic trails.  Timing and extent of grooming depend on conditions.  Check latest grooming report and be aware that snow conditions are dymamic.

Link to SONC Grooming Report:
Buck Pr/Hyatt Lake Area grooming is funded by donations to the Southern Oregon Nordic Club and support by the BLM.
We groom skate lanes with classic track when/where possible. See Current Condtions and Grooming Report page for more information:
For information on the Buck Praire Nordic Trails, see BLM website:
Caution:  Winter conditions are dynamic and snow conditions can change by the hour.  What was recently groomed can be drastically transformed by new snow, warming temperature, solar heat etc.

Groomed tracks
In partnership with the BLM, SONC volunteers are using a tracked Polaris ATV to pull a YTS tracksetter and trail reconditioner to groom Hyatt Lake/Buck Prairie Nordic System trails.  Thank you to the BLM for the equipment and to Southern ONC members who contributed to the groomer fund and especially SONC members putting in the long hours operating the grooming equipment.
Please consider making a donation to SONC's Groomer fund helping to maintain and improve the grooming equipment.  We have a space on our membership application form to designate a groomer fund donation and have a PayPal account set of for Grommer donations at:
